Staff who have Blue Care Network will be covered in full when the vaccine arrives, at no cost, with availability at Rite-Aid, Kroger, and Meijer.

Staff without insurance will have to go to a retail store, occupational health clinic or their county health department.  Prices will range from free (at many County Health Departments) to $30 per vaccine.  New reports indicate that staff without insurance will have the administration fee waived, as it will be billed back to the local health department.  Information is not clear at this time.

Consumers will be able to obtain vaccines through their Primary Care Physician or Health Department.  Those that are covered by Medicaid or Medicare will have full coverage.

The CDC has prioritized the following groups for the first wave of vaccines (due any day).
  1. Pregnant women;
  2. People who live with or care for children younger than six months of age;
  3. Health care and emergency services personnel;
  4. Children and young adults from 6 months to 24 years old;
  5. People ages 25–64 with chronic medical conditions that increase their risk of complications from influenza infection.

 For the most part, New Passages consumers are expected to qualify under category 5.  According to BCN and many health departments, our staff will not qualify as health care workers for the first round of vaccines—only first responders will qualify—watch the news and read the paper—this information changes daily.

The first round of vaccines is expected any day.  It is unknown when additional vaccines will be available.  You must be vigilant to seeking this information at the local level—news changes daily.  As soon as New Passages receives the information, we will pass it on to you.

frankLiving With Mental Illness: One Man’s Journey

Frank has faced some of life’s toughest situations; mental illness, alcoholism, imprisonment, homelessness, and is now on the long road to recovery.  Like many people suffering from mental illness, he went undiagnosed for most of his life.  Growing up in Roseville MI, he was one of eight siblings, attended Roseville High School, and never knew why he suffered from severe bouts of depression and anxiety.  At the age of twenty-three he was convicted of a non-violent conspiracy crime and sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison.  Upon his release, Frank’s depression worsened. He became dependent on alcohol and spent several years living on the street and shuffling between shelters.   It was during this time that Frank realized he needed to seek help for the depression and anxiety he was experiencing.  He went to a series of walk-in centers and an alcohol rehabilitation program at St. Johns in Brighton before being referred to New Passages Outpatient Services in Macomb County in March 2009.
