Best Practices: Illness Management and Recovery
Recently I opened my paycheck envelope to find the following message about Best Practices. The message from New Passages to all employees discusses the correlation between Illness Management and Recovery. I was struck by how simple and obvious this seems and yet how difficult it is to implement sometimes.

THE VALUE OF A DIVERSE WORK PLACE
Recently in a meeting, one of the newest members of our team commented that New Passages was one of the most accepting and diverse places he had ever worked. This is not by chance. From the beginning, we've set out to create a workplace that is as diverse as possible. One in which employees are confident that they will never be discriminated against because of the color of their skin, their gender, sexual orientation or disability.

ADVOCACY FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS RECOGNIZED IN AWARD
On April 17, 2008, I was honored to receive the Diversity Champion Award from the Race Relations & Diversity Task Force at the Birmingham Community House. What was really important about this honor was that it was for my advocacy of people with severe and persistent mental illness. It's not often that this kind of advocacy is recognized in the broader community. This award was really in recognition of New Passages’ work in helping people with mental illness on their Road to Recovery.
